The year 2008 starts off with yet another controversy, this time involving Kamalhasan and director/producer Sharan.

Sharan was the one who had produced and directed the Tamil version of 'Munnabhai MBBS', named 'Vasoolraja MBBS'. The film did very well at the box office and brought profits for everybody. Soon after this, Sharan had paid an advance of Rs 2 crores and signed Kamalhasan up for a new film that he intended to direct and produce. Kamalhasan demanded the distribution rights for some areas, which Sharan gladly gave away.

But, before he launched this film, he made another film in Tamil which flopped at the box office. Sharan was now in financial crisis and thought that it'd be better if he simply directed the new Kamalhasan starrer instead of producing it too.

So, Sharan found a producer who was willing to spend.

When Kamalhasan came to know about it, he wasn't happy because the director had changed the producer without even informing him and this would imply that he'll have to renegotiate the distribution rights that he had earlier asked for. So, Kamalhasan refused to star in the film and offered to repay the advance money.

Meanwhile, Sharan has now filed a complaint with the Producers' Guild seeking them to intervene and either get Kamalhasan to star in the film or return the advance.
