Interview with Bipasha Basu
|
The interview was long overdue. Bipasha Basu is a natural when it comes to getting into controversies. She also is very good at letting them accumulate for a while and then clear them all at the same time.
Here she is now, giving answers to some questions that only she could reply to.
You had started your career in small-banner films. But it looks as if these days you couldn't care less about them. Why?
It is very true that I began my career with films made by smaller banners. It is also true that I had learnt acting only by working in their films. In those days big banners didn't approach me because they didn't have faith in my skills. Normally, big banners don't approach rank newcomers with offers. These days, I have become a saleable star. Why shouldn't I work for big banners?
But there are also rumors that you're refusing offers from the big banners too! Why did you refuse to work in 'Dhoom'?
'Dhoom' was a multi-starrer film and the role that was offered to me didn't quite suit my image. I very respectfully told Aditya Chopra that I wouldn't be able to do the role. It was then given to Rimi Sen. But I had personally met the Chopras and requested them to cast me in the film's sequence. Everybody loved my role in the film. It had changed my entire career!
You are Bengali by birth and you are also getting offers from Bengali filmmakers. Why are you refusing them too?
That is because Bengali filmmakers suffer from an intense superiority complex. They think that they are better than the rest and don't even bother to be courteous to their stars. There is immense pressure on me to work in a Bengali film. I might do it in the future.
Whenever John Abraham's name is linked with that of any other actress, you end up fighting with them. Did you pick up a fight with Vidhya Balan too? We heard that due to her, your relationship with John had almost broken up…
It is true that John and I have our own fights like any other couple does. But these fights are not over his "link ups" with other actresses. There would never be such fights either because we have so much faith in each other. Regarding Vidhya Balan, we don't have a problem at all.
Why did you make Kamalhasan wait for such a long time with the offer to star in 'Mumbai Express' and then refuse it? He says that it was due to you that he was forced to pick Manisha Koirala up for the role...
It is not at all true that I had made him wait. Frankly, I wasn't happy about the role. In the film, the heroine is the mother of a ten-year-old boy. I didn't want to star in such a role. That's all.
