Interview with Jothirmayee
|
Jyothirmayi these days is making headlines in Tamil for blending both conventional and offbeat roles perfectly. She is one of those rare heroines whom Kollywood has accepted with open arms in spite of the fact that she is married.
You probably wouldn't even recognize her when you see her in her Tamil films. She was recently seen in the critically acclaimed 'Periyar' as Naagammai. She won rave reviews for her performance. Audience and critics alike say that she had almost lived the life of Naagammai in the film.
"Getting an offer to star in the film was an honor for me," she says. "Acting in action and romance films shortens your career drastically. But acting in films of historic significance like 'Periyar' makes you unforgettable."
After acting in the role, would you continue to act in glamorous roles too?
I don't intend to develop such an image. That's the reason why I'm trying my best to maintain a flexible image. An actress must be capable enough to act in any role given to her. I know what my limits are and I don't intend to break those barriers.
There are talks that you are hesitant to act with senior heroes in Tamil...
Says who? In my first Tamil film, I appeared in an item number. In the second film, I was Sundar C's heroine. I had recently completed two films, 'Sabari' with Vijayakanth and 'Naan Avan Illai' with Jeevan. If the story and my role are good, I really don't mind who the hero is.
You were one of the five heroines in 'Naan Avan Illai'. Were there any fights among heroines on the sets?
The film gave equal importance to all the five heroines. We had acted together in only one song sequence. You can act well only if there is a healthy competition.
How far is your husband helping you with your career?
I had never tried to hide the fact that I'm married. If I'm able to concentrate on my work so well, it is only because my family helps me. They understand that acting is important to me.
Will you continue to appear in item numbers?
It depends on the film banner and the background.
Tell us about your Hindi film 'Anubhav'.
Mine is a guest role in the film. I play the role of a tribal girl who converts to Buddhism. The film's shooting is now on in Karnataka and Kerala.
What difference do you notice in Malayalam and Tamil film industries?
Once Malayalam films were known for their realism, but these days, in their attempts to commercialize their films, lot of drastic changes have started to happen. Soon, there wouldn't be much difference between Tamil and Malayalam films. In Malayalam, films are completed faster than in Tamil.
Who are your favorite stars?
If I have forgotten to mention some names here, it is not because they aren't good actors and actresses. It is simply because I still haven't worked with them. I love the performances of Nedumudi Venu and Thilagan. They bring something special to the roles that they play.
